Aurora Networks Announces Addition of EtherMux to EtherTransport Product Line
New Module Increases Scalability and Reliability of Fast ROI SMB Solution
Santa Clara, CA. May 11, 2003 Aurora Networks, a leading
developer and manufacturer of advanced optical transport and distribution systems for
broadband networks, announces the addition of the EtherMux module to the Aurora
EtherTransport product line. Aurora EtherTransport is a cost-effective Fast Ethernet
solution enabling multiple system operators (MSOs) to build highly profitable new
revenue streams by providing broadband-based business services to small and
medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and multiple tenant units (MTUs) within their service
areas.
The new EtherMux module, model DS4008, adds a significant new set of
architectural options to the Aurora EtherTransport system, allowing up to 24
dedicated 100 Mbps connections to be served from a single field-hardened Aurora
EtherNode located near business customers. This highly scalable module allows MSOs
to pay as they go, installing EtherMux modules with pluggable transceivers as they
sign on new business customers, minimizing up-front capital expenditure. Additionally,
Aurora’s bypass switching approach, incorporated into the EtherMux, eliminates
single-point failures in the EtherTransport network.
Aurora EtherTransport allows MSOs to offer SMBs a wirespeed, fully
symmetric, low-latency (<1ms), 100 Mbps connection that is fully transparent to all
Layer 2 and higher protocols. The connection’s bandwidth, speed and symmetry enable
delivery of high-speed Internet access plus a wide variety of voice, video and data
services, including IP PBX, IP Centrex, videoconferencing, virtual local area networks
(VLANs), and virtual private networks (VPNs). Not only are these services highly
lucrative for MSOs, but, when delivered as a package, should contribute greatly to
long-term customer retention.
"Today, most MSOs have completed their infrastructure build-outs
and residential upgrades. Aurora’s EtherTransport architecture makes it easy for
MSOs to leverage their dark fiber and reach SMB customers, eighty per cent of which
are already inside the cable footprint," said John Dahlquist, Vice President of
Marketing for Aurora Networks. "The new EtherMux adds pay-as-you-go flexibility
and enhanced reliability to an already flexible, secure and cost-effective SMB
solution."
Aurora EtherMux
Aurora’s new EtherMux module is an optical aggregator with slots for eight pluggable
transceivers, enabling point-to-point connectivity between EtherNode locations and
up to eight OE1110 customer premises equipment (CPE) devices at SMB sites. Up to
three EtherMux modules can be accommodated in one EtherNode.
Aurora EtherTransport
Aurora EtherTransport offers the lowest cost-of-entry and fastest return on investment
(ROI) for MSOs looking to increase revenue by serving business customers passed by
their networks. This easy-to-deploy solution offers 1.6 Gbps of bandwidth per
wavelength, which can be significantly expanded with DWDM, and includes the following
products:
Model NI3000 Network Interface Module, located in the
headend, hub or regional data center, which interfaces with WAN/MAN routers/switches
and manages the Aurora EtherTransport network
Module DS4008 EtherMux module, located in the EtherNode,
which transports data between the EtherNode and business customer sites
Model OE1110 CPE device, which interfaces office LAN
switches/routers to the Aurora EtherTransport network
Aurora Opti-Trace Monitoring and Management software,
which activates and manages Fast Ethernet services via SNMP.
