Aurora Demonstrates Advanced, New Product Solutions at SCTE’s Cable-Tec Expo

Technology Enables New Revenue Streams for MSOs and Improves Operational Efficiencies

Santa Clara, CA. — April 28, 2003 — Aurora Networks, a leading developer and manufacturer of advanced optical transport and distribution systems for broadband networks, will demonstrate expanded product solutions for hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) and fiber deep architectures at SCTE’s Cable-Tec Expo (May 12-14, 2003, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Booth 740). Aurora’s new EtherMux module is the latest addition to the Aurora EtherTransport product line, a cost-effective Fast Ethernet solution enabling multiple system operators (MSOs) to build highly profitable new revenue streams by providing broadband-based business services to small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and multiple tenant units (MTUs) within their service areas.

Aurora will also be introducing the Optiplex II, a second generation family of optical demultiplexer/combiner products that allows remote management of broadcast and narrowcast optical signals when combined at a hub site. In addition, Aurora will demonstrate the benefits of reverse digital technology, including RF output stability, integrated Ethernet transport, integrated status monitoring, wide dynamic range, immunity to noise ingress, and "2-fer" node segmentation.

"Every year we look forward to the excitement of Expo," said John Dahlquist, Vice President of Marketing for Aurora Networks. "This hands-on, technical show allows us to meet personally with the engineers that are actually deploying the latest broadband solutions. The focused environment gives us the opportunity to share our newest innovations with operators, and help them solve the networking challenges that they face every day." Adds Dahlquist, "This year we’ll be demonstrating to operators how they can quickly and easily enter the lucrative SMB market and see a rapid return on their investment. We encourage everyone to stop by our booth at this 20th anniversary show and share in the excitement of the Expo and Aurora’s advanced solutions."

Aurora products and systems that will be demonstrated at Cable-Tec Expo 2003 include:

EtherMux
The new EtherMux module (model DS4008) is an optical aggregator with slots for eight pluggable transceivers, enabling point-to-point connectivity between EtherNode locations and up to eight OE1110 customer premises equipment (CPE) devices at SMB sites. Up to three EtherMux modules can be accommodated in a single field-hardened EtherNode, enabling up to 24 dedicated 100 Mbps connections per node. The EtherMux adds a significant new set of architectural options to the Aurora EtherTransport system. Features include pluggable transceivers for minimizing up-front capital expenditures, and bypass switching for eliminating single-point failures in the EtherTransport network.

Aurora EtherTransport offers the lowest cost-of-entry and fastest return on investment (ROI) for MSOs looking to increase revenue by serving SMBs passed by their networks. The Layer 1 Transport solution’s bandwidth, speed and symmetry enable delivery of high-speed Internet access plus a wide variety of voice, video and data services, including IP PBX, IP Centrex, video conferencing, virtual local area networks (VLANs) and virtual private networks (VPNs). When delivered as a package, these services reduce customer churn. Aurora EtherTransport typically provides ROI to MSOs within three to six months.

Optiplex II
The Aurora Optiplex II, series OP35x4, is the second generation of Aurora’s broadcast and narrowcast optical demultiplexer/combiner product line. The flagship model OP3524 enables remote monitoring and management of broadcast and narrowcast optical power levels when they are combined at a hub site, thus streamlining set-up and operating procedures for reduced cost and improved network performance. The model OP3514 offers remote power level monitoring of the Optiplex without the advanced optical power level management capabilities of the OP3524. The model OP3534 provides an all passive solution that, though lacking the monitoring and management features of more advanced models, still provides the highest density broadcast/narrowcast combining solution available. All of the Optiplex II products provide up to four broadcast/narrowcast combinations and occupy a single width, half-depth slot in the Aurora CH3000 chassis. Because all signal combining is done optically, the Optiplex II family of products provides virtually unlimited isolation of the broadcast and narrowcast signals.

Advanced Product Solutions for HFC and Fiber Deep Architectures
Additionally, Aurora will be demonstrating its entire suite of optical transport products, nodes, and element monitoring, including:

•  The fully segmentable 4000 Series Scalable Node

•  "2-fer" digital return transceiver and receiver products

•  The industry’s most space efficient, high performance 1310 nm DFB transmitters

•  A complete line of broadcast and narrowcast 1550 nm transmitters

•  Optical amplifiers for DWDM and 1550 nm distribution applications

•  The industry’s widest range of optical passives

•  Digital reverse technology for Motorola SG2000 series nodes
