Aurora Announces Ethernet Business Services Solution

Company to Demonstrate Solution with Exceptional ROI at BroadbandPlus and CableNET®

Santa Clara, CA. — December 2, 2002 — Aurora Networks, a leading developer of advanced optical transport systems for broadband networks, announced today the availability of its new Aurora Ethernet Transport solution for multiple system operators (MSOs). The new offering provides exceptional return on investment (ROI), ease and flexibility for MSOs deploying business services to small office/home offices (SOHOs) and small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) passed by their networks. Aurora Ethernet Transport will be demonstrated at two venues at BroadbandPlus, Aurora’s Booth #4812 and CableNET®.

Aurora Ethernet Transport offers 1.6 gigabits per second (Gbps) bandwidth per wavelength, which can be extended using dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM). MSOs can provide their business customers with a wide variety of voice, video and data services, including virtual local area networks (VLANs), virtual private networks (VPNs) and leased line replacements. The solution’s very low latency (under 1 millisecond) makes it ideal for latency-sensitive applications such as video streaming and voice-over-IP (VoIP). Using Aurora Ethernet Transport, MSOs can expect a rapid return on investment, typically within six months of deployment.

Aurora Ethernet Transport offers unique flexibility and scalability to MSOs deploying business services. It leverages existing cable plant, and allows flexible bandwidth allocation between business Ethernet traffic and residential subscriber RF traffic. Its components are compact and easy to install, and provide MSOs with clear network demarcation points at the business premise and headend.

The solution’s security and robustness are also notable. Because Aurora Ethernet traffic is channelized from end to end using Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), MSOs can offer businesses dedicated, full duplex 100 Mbps connectivity with a very high degree of security. Because Aurora Ethernet Transport is a Layer 1 transport, it preserves and passes through Layer 2 and higher protocols so that MSOs’ networks may be overlaid with datacom protocols for robustness and security (e.g., QoS, IPSec).

"Aurora Ethernet Transport is field tested, proven and available today," said John Dahlquist, Vice President of Marketing for Aurora Networks. "This revenue-generating broadband infrastructure has been in continuous service at municipal offices and school district facilities in a county near Dallas, Texas without a user-impacting problem since installation was completed in September 2001. The network has enabled significant cost savings for the customer through the elimination of expensive T1 lines, and has generated profits for the operator for over a year."

Aurora Ethernet Transport includes:

  • Model NI3000 Network Interface Module, located in the headend, which interfaces with MAN/WAN routers/switches and manages the Aurora Ethernet Transport network.

  • Model OE1110 Ethernet Access Device for business premises, which interfaces with office LAN switches/routers.

  • Opti-Trace Monitoring and Management software, which enables provisioning and management of Fast Ethernet services.
