Systems Development Lab Technologist (CT201)
The person in this position will work in the Systems Development Laboratory under
the supervision of the Development Lab Manager, performing hands-on testing tasks related to
testing and verification of Aurora Networks components and systems to CATV standards, and
involving the use of RF and fiber optic test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, CW and QAM
signal sources, network analyzers, temperature chambers, BER/MER receivers, noise generators,
power meters (both RF and optical), optical spectrum analyzers, and other equipment commonly
used in a CATV laboratory or field/headend environment. In addition, this person will support
customer evaluations and qualification testing, as well as documentation of test methods,
procedures and results, including the preparation of reports summarizing the testing done in a
clear and concise manner. Working with other technologists or engineers in a collaborative
environment, the successful candidate will perform all these tasks based on written or verbal
instruction from the Development Lab Manager or other project supervisors or initiators and
will exhibit a critical approach to test procedures, methods and results.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to, the following):
- System Design Testing. The candidate will be responsible for assisting in formulating and
executing System Level tests on DWDM and CWDM Forward/Reverse Analog/Digital architecture
designs that consist of Aurora Networks components such as laser transmitters, receivers,
RF nodes, DWDM actives and passives, EDFAs, Ethernet transport devices and Media Converters,
amongst others. This will involve testing regular designs as well as unorthodox designs that
push the limits of Aurora’s equipment in special applications, as well as formulating and
writing test plans and test result reports for such tests. Testing will require the use of
spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, QAM BER/MER testers, and other RF and fiber optic test
equipment.
- Component Level Testing. The candidate will be responsible for assisting in formulating and
executing tests on individual Aurora Networks components such as laser transmitters, receivers,
RF nodes, DWDM actives and passives, EDFAs and other optical amplifiers, Ethernet transport
devices, media converters, as well as any other components designed and produced by the R&D
department. This will involve testing the parts in isolation rather than in a system, and will
be performed using RF spectrum and network analyzers, power supplies, noise sources, QAM
generators, QAM receivers, RF signal sources, temperature chambers and other RF and fiber optic
equipment to perform tests. Accurate and well organized documentation will be required to
document the tests and test results.
- Customer Evaluation Testing. The candidate will be required to assist in testing performed in
the Systems Lab for customers who visit Aurora's facilities for in-house evaluations of
Aurora Networks equipment for corporate approval.
- Test Procedures and Policies. The candidate will participate in preparation of written design
guidelines, test procedures and policies relevant to the Systems Lab.
- Lab Construction and Automation Projects. The candidate will assist with any construction
projects related to the Systems Lab. As the Lab grows in scope, objectives and testing capability,
more test equipment will be introduced, and construction of capabilities such as signal generator
banks will be needed. The candidate will also assist with optimizing and automating tasks in the
lab, using appropriate software and hardware to streamline tests that are performed many times.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the telecommunications or CATV industry in laboratory, headend
or field environments performing test and verification functions and tasks with CATV equipment
(both RF and fiber optic), or equivalent or related experience.
- Basic knowledge, familiarity and understanding of CATV access RF and fiber optic technologies such
as optical fiber, laser transmitters, EDFAs, receivers, RF nodes, RF amplifiers, Ethernet transport
devices, media converters, DWDM and CWDM passives, digital reverse technologies and other commonly
used technologies in the CATV and telecommunications industries.
- Good working knowledge and hands-on experience using HP and Agilent spectrum analyzers (e.g.,
8591C or equivalent from other vendors), and network analyzers (e.g., 8753D or equivalent),
QAM BER and MER receivers, signal generators (QAM and CW), RF power meters, optical spectrum
analyzers, optical power meters, fiber optic cleaning materials and procedures. Familiarity with
making standard CATV measurements such as CNR, CTB, CSO, cross modulation, NPR, BER and
S-parameters to current SCTE standards using this equipment. Familiarity with such SCTE standards
for these measurements and how they are applied.
- Demonstrated ability in verbal and written communication. (Note: Please provide samples
of writing or reports done in the past.)
- Ability and desire to take direction from Supervisor at any time, as well as ability and desire to
work autonomously with minimal supervision, under the direction of Supervisor.
- Physically able to move heavy equipment and Aurora Networks equipment that is used in the lab, as
well as physical ability to move whatever is required to set it up quickly and efficiently (for
example, to assemble components into a system, clean all optical connections, and establish the
proper signal and power levels.)
- Demonstrated ability and desire to work in a group environment of CATV engineers and technicians,
or individually as directed by Supervisor, and ability to fluidly move between both types of roles.
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and absorb technical concepts.
- Familiarity with Labview and VEE software for instrumentation control, as well as familiarity with
programming macros using VBA in Excel is a plus.

Systems Development Lab Manager / Technologist (CT202)
The successful candidate will report to Aurora Networks Chief Technology Officer and will
be responsible for running the day to day activities of the Systems Development Lab under the supervision
of the CTO. The charter of the Systems Development Lab is to develop new applications for existing
Aurora Networks equipment and to support R&D in feasibility testing and defining new products and
technology. The scope of this charter includes performing evaluations of Aurora Networks equipment for
approval by our customers. The Systems Development Laboratory is a facility that contains fiber optic
equipment, digital baseband test equipment and RF test equipment such as automated and manual CW and QAM
signal sources, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, temperature chambers, QAM BER and MER testers,
optical spectrum analyzers, RF power meters, optical and RF attenuators, SmartBit testers, digital signal
analyzers, and other equipment related to the data transport, RF transport and optics fields in the CATV
and telecommunications industries. It is used to perform system and component level testing of DWDM and
CWDM Forward/Reverse Analog/Digital architecture designs that consist of Aurora Networks components such
as laser transmitters, receivers, RF nodes, DWDM actives and passives, EDFAs, Ethernet transport devices,
and media converters, amongst others. The successful candidate will be the primary person running this lab.
Job Growth Potential: The successful candidate will have an opportunity to be promoted
to higher level responsibility position within the System Development Lab upon proving his/her capabilities
in innovative interpretation of the test results, in translating the test results into design and
architecture/technology application guidelines, as well as in evolving tested architectures into new and
innovative applications. Additionally, other opportunities within Aurora Networks will be open to the
candidate if he or she proves to be suited for them.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to, the following):
- System Design Level Testing. The candidate will be responsible for coordinating and executing
testing of new architectural applications and projects that arise from external and internal
customers in order to win over new projects. This will involve assembling such architectures
in the lab with Aurora Networks equipment and then organizing and scheduling resources to
complete the testing in a timely manner. It will also consist of consultation with the field
engineering, R&D and CTO organizations as to the scope of the testing required, and will
also involve hands-on testing by the Lab manager as well. Finally, well written reports will
need to be issued summarizing the results to interested parties within Aurora Networks.
